The Return of the Poet

The Return of the Poet

By Gregory Bryant

A Haiku is formed from the ashes.
The sun forms familiar shadows.
Words are jettisoned from deep beneath the earth to the surface.
We are attempting to define the shadows from the sun.
Rhyme has been pushed out like the birth of a newborn.
The iambic pentameter, meter, stanza and turn have reappeared from the darkness.
I can smell the metaphors and my mouth receives the familiar taste of a simile.

Do You Have Any Idea?

Do You Have Any Idea?
Do you have any idea,
How you boil my frenzied blood,
break my damns to release the flood,
Rip my bones and pin me to this flakey wall?

Now hush your sweet mouth,
I have better plans for your lips,
Working magic with your fingertips,
I am greedy, excited, and hungry for this free-for-all.

Do you have any idea,
Why I pull you off your perch,
Arouse you to writhe and lurch,
To yell 'I love you' so the whole damned world can hear?

Let us loose all control,
I chrome double dare you
But I never will share you,
So step on into my male bedroom snare!

Do you have any idea,
How long I have waited,
Left bursting and frustrated?
I want to use you and use you and use you and use you more.

I get insanely jealous,
So when you're howling with passion,
I'll keep you dangling on rations,
Till you swear it's only me that you will adore.

Do you have any idea,
How I planned to entrap you,
As I tease and unwrap you,
By taking explicit and betraying photographs?

No you have no idea,
How I would trick you with lust,
As you respond to my thrusts,
So you never dream of returning to my rival.

So embrace my chains,
I'll hold a party just for one,
And watch you plead to let you come,
When you hook me up to your saddle and bridle.

Really, you have no idea!

The Death of the Poet

The Death of the Poet

By Gregory Bryant

A haunting stillness caresses the earth
Time loses track of itself and reality
A baby is born empty and with no brightness
The teachers teach the end of an era
The paper withers and crumbles into dust
While the pen and pencil no longer writes
The existence of rhyme, meter, stanza and turn are lost in the darkness
A silhouette of the past is singed into the fabric of our souls
Where are the Sonnets we once knew
Have we lost the metaphors and similes
Mankind has lost its iambic pentameter
We have lost the truest form of expression
with the death of the poet

I Have Waited for This Dance

I Have Waited for This Dance
I have waited for this dance,
To begin with you again,
Never knowing quite how or when,
An elusive second chance?

This life can feel so cruel,
With rare moments filled with joy,
But when you find the real McCoy,
Your heart is bound to rule.

You may never know,
What I have been prepared to give,
To discover where you live,
Not caring who you were with.
You may never realise,
How I prayed with all my heart,
With a love right off the charts,
Now I never want us to part.

I have waited for this dance,
From sunrise till sundown,
The day that you left town,
You set sail without a glance.

That ship sailed by too fast,
Like rivers to the sea,
Our tide was not to be,
But that's all in the past.

I may never confess,
How I have placed my life on hold,
Not caring, growing old,
Standing still in the freezing cold.
When you said hello today,
The sun rose in the sky,
My tears began to dry,
Oh how I desire to make you mine.

I have waited for this dance,
May I stumble through your door,
I love you even more,
So forgive my strong advance.

Can we find a place to start,
We could talk till half past ten?
Then if you invite me back again,
I could offer you my heart.

I want to treat you like,
The Beauty that you are,
I have travelled blind so far,
Through every town and side-street bar.
And now I am here,
Will you ride back home with me,
Be mine eternally,
I'm so in love can you not see?

I have waited for this dance,
To kiss and hold you tight,
And lay with you all night,
Until the early morning light.

It's far more than romance,
With more meaning than the before,
I desire and adore,
Yes I have waited for this dance.

Poets & Writers - We are the nation's largest nonprofit literary organization serving poets, fiction writers, and creative nonfiction writers. Our national office is located in New York City. Our California branch office is based in Los Angeles.

Poets & Writers Magazine is our organization's flagship publication and the leading journal of its kind. Along with essays on the literary life and interviews with writers, the magazine publishes articles with practical applications for both emerging and established authors. In addition, it provides the most comprehensive listing of literary grants and awards, deadlines, and prize winners available in print.

Poets & Writers' web site, pw.org, includes a searchable database of writers; advice on topics such as copyright, publishing, and finding a writers conference; along with links to other web sites of interest to writers. Another popular feature is the Speakeasy Message Forum, which serves as a central meeting place and community center for writers. Visit us at www.pw.org!

Each year, through our Readings/Workshops Program, we sponsor more than 2,000 literary events throughout New York and California, as well as in Atlanta, Chicago, Detroit, Houston, New Orleans, Seattle, Tucson, and Washington, D.C. We make matching grants to a variety of organizations—from grassroots to nationally acclaimed presenters and distributes more than $200,000 annually to more than 800 writers.

Our Information Services department offers publishing advice to writers and maintains a directory of writers, an online database of more than 8,000 authors, including contact information and publication credits. The directory makes it easier for writers to stay in touch with one another and for reading series coordinators, editors, and agents to find writers.

The Maureen Egen Writers Exchange Award introduces emerging writers from a different state each year to the New York City literary community. Each year two writers from one state are selected to receive the award, which includes an all-expenses-paid, week-long trip to New York City to meet with literary agents, editors, publishers and writers.

The Jackson Poetry Prize honors an American poet of exceptional talent who has published at least one book of recognized literary merit but has not yet received major national acclaim. After the Lannan Foundation's Literary Fellowships, the Jackson Poetry Prize of $50,000 will be the largest award for an early to mid-career poet.

As a co-founder of the Literary Network, we continue to champion the cause of freedom of expression and advocates on behalf of writers for public funding of literature and the arts.

The Friends of Poets & Writers is a generous group of donors who provide financial support for our programs. The Friends are writers, readers, and others who wish to support contemporary writers and literature. To thank them for their support, Friends receive special benefits. For more information, visit the Friends online.

Writers for the Red Cross - Writers share a commitment to community by bringing people together through their stories. This is our chance to support other organizations with a similar mission of community, like THE AMERICAN RED CROSS.
