Contemporary Fiction Author Trice Hickman

Hello. My name is Trice Hickman. I’m a self-proclaimed southern girl, and an award-winning, bestselling author of fiction books. My debut novel, Unexpected Interruptions, was selected as a Black Expressions “Dynamic Debut.” The novel also won the Southeastern Virginia Arts Association’s 2008 Afr’ Am Literary Award for Best New African American Voice, and the Best Romance Novel Award at the 2008 African American Literary Awards Show. My latest novel, Keeping Secrets & Telling Lies, was released June 2009, and has received praise from readers, literary reviewers, and book clubs across the country. Prior to becoming a published author, I worked in both corporate and non-profit organizations. I earned a BA degree from Winston-Salem State University, and an MA degree from Wake Forest University. My third novel, Playing the Hand You’re Dealt, will be released summer 2010.
I’ve always loved books and the written word. I can remember as a child being very excited when my parents would take my siblings and me to the half-price bookstore in my hometown! I absolutely loved reading, so it was a natural progression for me to become a writer.
Name some of my favorite authors? Wow, that’s a tough one! I have so many authors who are my favorites, it’s really hard to name them all (and I don’t want to run the risk of excluding anyone). I think I’ll just say it’s a mixture of self-published, traditionally published, and new authors.

I give back to both the community at large and the literary community. I give back to my community by donating portions of my book sales to charities such as The Border Babies Program (which helps abandoned, drug-addicted babies), The Georgia Avenue Rock Creek Church Family Support Collaborative (which helps transitioning families gain a better standard of living), and Dress For Success (which provides underserved women with professional attire for the workplace). I give back to the literary community by helping aspiring authors in any way I can. Many aspiring writers (and some published authors) come to me seeking advice, and I gladly give of my time to help them. I’m also starting a self-publishing “how-to” workshop to help people who are interested in learning how to successfully publish their own book.
What is one tip I would give new authors? Good question!...Can I give two tips? (ha, ha!) Seriously, I would tell new authors to always be professional in whatever you do, and NEVER take no for an answer! Professionalism is very important because it sets the tone for how people will perceive you and receive you in this business. You may never travel to certain places, but your name and reputation surely will. And never give up, never take no for an answer. Keep trying until you get the “YES” that you’re looking for!
My next event is my self-publishing workshop titled; Make It Happen: How to Successfully Publish, Market, and Sell Your Own Book! It will be held January 23, 2010, from 4:00-6:00pm at The Mulberry Inn, located at 16890 Warwick Blvd., in Newport News, VA. Ticket cost is $40 in advance, $45 at the door. For ticket information contact Ellen Sudderth at 757-303-4863 or email her at mrssudds@yahoo.com. *If purchasing tickets in advance a $20 deposit is due by December 31, 2009, and a final $20 deposit is due by January 7, 2010.
The biggest lesson that I’ve learned since becoming an author is that I’m a lot stronger than I thought I was. You have to have a good business mind, thick skin, and be very resilient to survive in this business. Not everyone is going to like your work, but you have to have faith and confidence that most people will!
I consider myself to be a contemporary fiction writer, and I love it!
My books can be found wherever books are sold and/or carried, from Amazon, Barnes & Nobel, and Borders, to libraries and specialty stores. If my books (Unexpected Interruptions and Keeping Secrets & Telling Lies) are not on the shelves at your local bookstore, please ask the manager to order copies! Readers can also go to my web site, www.tricehickman.com, and click on Buy the Book. I love hearing from readers, so please contact me at tricehickman@yahoo.com
